VOICES FROM THE FIELD: RURAL ORGANIZERS ON WHAT THEY NEED FROM FUNDERS

This document, authored by Judy Hatcher with support from the Neighborhood Funders Group’s Integrated Rural Strategies Group, lifts up the perspectives of rural organizers working at the intersections of environment, economy, equity, and civic engagement. Drawing from interviews and case examples, it explores how organizers define “rural,” navigate issues of race and intersectionality, build sustainable local economies, and expand civic power in their communities. The report also reflects on what funders can do to strengthen rural movements and ensure that local leadership thrives. At Aspen CSG, we share this commitment to amplifying rural voices and building systems of support that enable organizers to create resilient, equitable futures in the places they call home.
