SPIDER DIAGRAM: ASSESSING WEALTH IN A SECTOR

This exercise uses a spider diagram to help groups assess the relative strength of different forms of community wealth—political, social, cultural, financial, natural, intellectual, individual, and built—within a chosen sector. Participants rate each capital on a scale of 0 to 5, where true wealth reflects both health and local ownership or control. A follow-up worksheet guides discussion about areas of weakness, areas of strength, and how stronger capitals might be leveraged to support weaker ones. This assessment approach mirrors Aspen CSG’s asset-based framework, which emphasizes that rural prosperity grows when communities recognize, balance, and intentionally invest across all forms of wealth.
