LESSONS FROM APPALACHIA ON INVESTING IN RURAL DOWNTOWNS

The Downtown Revitalization Playbook, developed by Invest Appalachia with support from the Appalachian Funders Network and the Central Appalachia Network, is designed as a practical guide for communities, funders, and practitioners committed to rebuilding rural downtowns. Drawing from lessons in Central Appalachia, it highlights how COVID-era shifts in migration and work created new opportunities for rural revitalization, with young professionals moving home, starting businesses, and investing in walkable, vibrant downtowns. The playbook emphasizes seven guiding principles—such as long-term investment, community leadership, and care for rural assets—while outlining the “players” needed to carry out redevelopment strategies. It also provides a readiness assessment to help communities evaluate their capacity to attract and leverage investment. This work underscores a critical truth: strong, resilient rural economies start in thriving local centers. That insight directly complements Aspen CSG’s mission of equipping rural leaders and partners to align resources and strategies for durable, community-driven prosperity.
