INFORMATION ON THE REGIONAL RURAL DEVELOPMENT CENTERS

The Regional Rural Development Centers (RRDCs), established under the Rural Development Act of 1972, are USDA–NIFA partnerships housed at leading public universities, such as Penn State (Northeast) and the University of Idaho (West). They serve as vital connectors between university research, Extension services, and rural communities, helping local leaders, entrepreneurs, farmers, and families tackle development challenges. By linking science-based research with on-the-ground needs, the RRDCs address cross-regional issues such as workforce development, e-commerce, and the evolving dynamics between rural, suburban, and urban areas. Each center tailors programs to its region while also collaborating nationally, convening diverse stakeholders, and forming public-private partnerships to generate innovative, practical solutions for resilient and inclusive rural economies. This approach complements Aspen CSG’s Rural Development Hubs work, which emphasizes cross-sector collaboration, regional networks, and asset-based strategies to strengthen local leadership and long-term community well-being.
