Book is a record of the International Symposium on National Perceptions and Political Significance of Rural Areas held at the Aspen Institute’s Wye Woods Conference Center on November 18-20, 1988.

The symposium chiefly focused on national attitudes toward rural areas and their political salience in several economically developed countries. Primary purpose of the symposium was to provide participants an opportunity to learn about national values, beliefs, and perceptions regarding rural areas in other countries, and how these and other significant aspects o the social and political systems in these countries affect thinking and policy on rural matters.
