From the Delta to Aspen: Elevating Rural Voices & Solutions

Attending the Aspen Ideas Festival this year was one of the most energizing and affirming experiences of my professional life. As someone who’s deeply rooted in the Mississippi Delta, I carried with me not only my own story but the hopes and challenges of a region often left out of national conversations. Being selected as a 2025 Aspen Ideas Fellow was more than an honor, it was a chance to represent rural voices and bring the Delta’s resilience and innovation to a global stage.

Over the course of several days, I engaged with leaders from around the world, people reimagining education, public health, economic development, and climate resilience. These weren’t just conversations; they were laboratories for bold thinking. I spoke with organizers, scholars, funders, and social entrepreneurs, many of whom were encountering rural stories like ours for the first time. That exchange of ideas and lived experience reminded me just how interconnected our futures really are.

I came back to Mississippi with a renewed commitment to collaboration across sectors. What I saw at Aspen confirmed something I’ve long believed: the best solutions for rural communities come from within, but they thrive when connected to larger networks of support and knowledge. I’m excited to bring new tools to our work at Delta Compass, including stronger ways to measure equity and community progress, and clearer strategies to build an inclusive energy and infrastructure workforce across the region.

Most importantly, I return home with new relationships, with thinkers and doers who are eager to invest in places like the Mississippi Delta not out of charity, but out of recognition that rural innovation is essential to the country’s future. We’ve already begun shaping new pilots that lift up local talent, deepen civic participation, and build wealth that stays rooted in place.

Aspen was not just a platform, it was a mirror. It showed me how far we’ve come in the Delta, and how much more we can do when we’re seen, heard, and connected. I’m proud to bring those insights back to our communities, and to keep pushing forward with the belief that rural places like ours don’t just deserve a seat at the table, we help build the table.
