The Just Transition Fund (JTF) is a pioneering philanthropic initiative dedicated to helping communities and workers most impacted by coal’s decline build resilient, diversified economies. Through grants, technical assistance, and the Federal Access Center, JTF has helped leverage over $2.6 billion in public investment, supported nearly 1,200 new local businesses, trained nearly 20,000 workers, and created thousands of jobs in coal-dependent regions ranging from Appalachia to the Navajo Nation. By investing in locally led, asset-based economic strategies with a strong emphasis on community agency, JTF mirrors and extends Aspen CSG’s model—deploying place-based, inclusive development frameworks that empower rural regions to adapt and thrive through systems-level civic and economic transformation.
