MEETING LEADERS WHERE THEY ARE

This chapter highlights how Rural Development Initiatives (RDI) built and sustained the Rural Community Leadership Program (RCLP) to respond to decades of economic decline and disinvestment across the Pacific Northwest. Through a long-term partnership with the Ford Family Foundation, RDI developed a locally driven, inclusive, and resilient leadership model that trained thousands of community members, built regional networks, and equipped rural residents to take on challenges ranging from economic recovery to natural disasters and social tensions. The chapter emphasizes that strong local leadership—diverse, connected, and rooted in community—is foundational to long-term rural vitality. These lessons align closely with Aspen CSG’s Rural Development Hub framework, underscoring that leadership development is not separate from rural prosperity but its very foundation, and that investment in local leaders is the key to sustaining rural resilience and equity
